A Feathered Captive
A July Submission Poem by Depth & Dagger
A Feathered Captive
A feathered captive,
her gaze, a desolate yearning for stars unseen,
no thought could wander past the metal’s sheen.
Her gilded prison, where a life half-lived in fear,
consumed her vibrant age, year after lonely year.
Forgetting how to fly,
her beaten heart, estranged from earth and sky.
No vibrant breath to fill her shallow lung,
no tender earth where life’s last song was sung.
Then, freedom’s door swung wide, a silent plea,
a boundless sky, a terrifying liberty.
But she, a spirit bound
by chains of dread, remained upon the ground.
The world beyond, a terrifying, unknown grace,
a future her half-lived mind could not embrace.
So anguish claimed her last and bitter sigh,
her vacant gaze still fixed upon the endless sky.
The gilded prison, her horizon, cruel and cold,
the only fate her fearful heart would hold.
